In December 2023, we visited Maastricht in the Netherlands to explore the city. Along the way, we stumbled across a Christmas market and spent part of the cool evening enjoying warm glühwein. It was an unplanned addition to our visit, and a lovely little memory to bring home.

December gives a city visit a different rhythm. The cold makes a warm drink particularly welcome, and discovering something unexpected gives you a reason to pause. Our evening in Maastricht brought those simple pleasures together.

A Winter Evening in Maastricht

There is something satisfying about leaving room in a trip for whatever you happen to find. We were looking around the city, and the Christmas market became part of the experience without needing a reservation or a carefully timed itinerary. Sometimes wandering is enough of a plan.

The glühwein certainly helped with the cool evening. Holding a warm drink while taking in a Christmas market is one of those small seasonal pleasures that needs very little improvement. A comfortable pair of shoes and someone to enjoy it with will usually do the job.

Looking back at this video, I appreciate having a record of an ordinary, enjoyable evening away. Travel memories can come from a brief stop, a shared drink or an unexpected discovery just as easily as a major attraction. Those moments deserve a place in the collection, too.
