When I first started keto, I thought that once I was in ketosis, every day would feel amazing. My clothes would always fit better, my body would feel lighter, and I’d never have those “ugh, nothing looks good on me” mornings again.
Spoiler alert: that’s not how it works.
Even after losing nearly 90 lbs, I still have fat days—days when I feel bloated, puffy, or just not my best. And here’s the truth: that’s normal.
Why Fat Days Still Happen in Ketosis
- Water Retention – Even on low carb, hormones, sodium intake, and stress can cause your body to hold on to extra water.
- Hormonal Fluctuations – For women, the menstrual cycle can cause shifts in water weight and body perception.
- Inflammation – Certain foods, workouts, or lack of sleep can temporarily make you feel heavier.
The good news? These fluctuations aren’t fat gain. They’re just part of your body’s natural rhythm.
How I Handle Fat Days Without Losing Momentum
- Stay Off the Scale – If I know I’m retaining water, I don’t need that number messing with my mindset.
- Double Down on Hydration – Flushing out excess water helps me feel better within a day or two.
- Wear Something Comfortable – Confidence starts with feeling at ease in your own clothes.
- Remind Myself It’s Temporary – I’ve seen it before—this feeling passes, and my body resets.
Keto is a Lifestyle, Not Perfection
Being in ketosis doesn’t make you immune to natural ups and downs. What it does give you is a stronger baseline of health, energy, and confidence, so those “fat days” have less power over you.
