There’s something a little rebellious and delicious about traveling after everyone else has gone home. This past October, I packed my sandals, tossed in a sundress or two, and jetted off to Crete for a sun-soaked escape—and let me tell you, it was the breath of fresh air I didn’t know I needed.
But here’s the trick: if you’re thinking about doing the same, go in early October. Not late. Trust me on this.
🏖️ All-Inclusive, All-Relaxing
We stayed at a gorgeous all-inclusive beach resort in Amoudara, where the staff still had that “we’re happy to see you” sparkle and the buffet hadn’t run out of steam. My biggest decision each morning? Pool or beach first. (Okay, and maybe whether to order the local rosé or stick to sparkling water at lunch.)
There’s something wonderfully carefree about having everything handled for you. Meals, drinks, evening shows… even poolside snacks. It gave me the perfect blend of lazy luxury and cultural adventure. It was my first time at an all-inclusive resort, and I am hooked!
🏛️ Channeling My Inner Goddess at Ancient Sites
Crete isn’t just a beachy getaway—it’s a living museum. We carved out a few days to explore Knossos, the legendary Minoan palace complex, and it blew my mind. Wandering through ancient ruins with barely a crowd in sight made it feel like I had stumbled into history’s secret garden.
I had always had a fascination for Greek Mythology growing up, and I even took a few classes on Greek History and Mythology when I was in college. Seeing these locations in real life was surreal for me! I found that I was retelling old myths to my partner that had been long-buried in my memory.
We also loved getting lost in the narrow lanes of Heraklion. Everything was winding down for the season, and we appreciated the slow pace. That’s part of the charm—by October, Crete is catching its breath, and you feel like you’re part of something more local and authentic.
🌤️ Why Early October Is the Sweet Spot
If you’re thinking of going, aim for the first week or two of October. Here’s why:
- 🌞 The weather is still beautiful—warm days, cool evenings, and plenty of sun
- 🧘♀️ Resorts are quieter but still fully operational
- 🏛️ Tourist sites aren’t packed, so you can explore in peace
- 🌺 Locals are relaxed and friendly—after the summer rush, they’re finally able to exhale
But come too late in the month, and poof—like a Greek fairy tale, the island starts shutting down. Restaurants close, buses become infrequent, and the atmosphere shifts from “vacation dream” to “ghost town.”
🧳 Final Tips:
- Bring a light jacket for evenings
- Rent a car for at least a day—it’s the best way to reach ancient sites and hidden beaches. *It helps if you drive a standard! Automatics are hard to come by!
- Don’t skip the local olive oil tasting—you’ll never look at a store-bought bottle the same way again
- And if you’re booking an all-inclusive, double-check that bars and restaurants stay open through mid-October
Crete in October was soul-soothing, sun-drenched, and just the right kind of quiet. I came home rested, inspired, and maybe even a little bit wiser (thanks, ancient ruins). If you’re craving one last dip in the Mediterranean before winter hits – book that trip.
You won’t regret it.
