Bregenz, Austria: A Sunny Pause on a March Birthday Trip

Every year, my partner and I try to plan a short trip, and this year was to the Bodensee. Bregenz was part of my birthday trip in March 2026, and we were fortunate to visit on a sunny day. The photographs in this video capture the town itself, offering a small collection of memories from our time there.

There is something satisfying about looking back through travel photographs that focus on a place. Buildings, streets and everyday details can bring a day back into focus, reminding us of what we noticed when we had time to look around.

A City Between the Lake and the Mountains

Bregenz sits on the Austrian shores of Lake Constance, known locally as the Bodensee. As the capital of Vorarlberg, it brings together a lakeside setting, a cultural identity and the nearby slopes of the Pfänder.

That combination gives the city several different sides to explore. The waterfront offers open views, while the town’s streets and historic areas invite a closer look at its architecture and character. It is a place where the wider landscape and the smaller details both deserve attention.

The Character of the Old Town

One of Bregenz’s distinctive areas is the Oberstadt, or Upper Town. Its cobbled streets, medieval walls and historic buildings offer a different perspective from the shopping streets and activity closer to the lake.

The Martinsturm, or St. Martin’s Tower, is one of the city’s best-known landmarks. Together with the surrounding streets, it provides a useful starting point for understanding the older side of Bregenz. For anyone who enjoys photographing architecture, this part of the city offers plenty to notice.

More to Discover

Bregenz also has a strong connection to arts and culture. Its summer festival is particularly associated with performances on the lake, while museums and contemporary architecture add to the city’s appeal throughout the year.

The Pfänder provides another perspective on the area, with a cable car connecting Bregenz to panoramic views over Lake Constance and the surrounding mountains. These are possibilities for a future visit, or ideas for anyone planning a stay beyond a look around the town.

A Small Birthday-Trip Memory

For this video, I wanted to keep the focus on the photographs from our March visit. It is a simple record of Bregenz on a sunny day, and one small part of a birthday trip that I can now revisit.
